In running…and in life

I a-l-m-o-s-t talked myself out of my timed 5K yesterday. Our region was under a high wind warning, with gusts of 45 MPH and power-outages occurring because of the wind. Blah!

I braved the wind and headed out anyway, feeling a little nervous, but knowing I’d regret it if I didn’t get out there. But…when I got going, I actually felt over-dressed. I ran in one of the city parks and the trees totally protected me. Without the wind, it was actually warm and beautiful!

Here are my stats for this week’s timed 5K.

SURPRISE RIGHT?! I know, I was totally blown away! (why yes…that is my fastest 5K…ever.)

Here’s a side-by-side of last week and this week.

Why the big difference? It was definitely cooler out today but the bottom line was…

I. kept. going.

I’ve learned that in running, and in life, there is a difference between pain and injury.

Pain is that feeling that nags at you to stop because it’s not comfortable any more. Pain is that voice that says, “just walk” when you start to breathe hard and feel tightness in your legs. When pain sees a steep hill it says, “really? you don’t need to do that.”

Injury is different. Injury says, “Please stop, I’m hurt.” When you are injured, you need to stop, rest, and recover fully before starting back.

Yesterday, I felt pain. Yesterday, I told pain to shut the hell up, and today… I am stronger for it. On my next run, I will be stronger for it. Next time I’m not sure I can do something that seems really hard…I’ll remember my run yesterday, and dig a little deeper! Yeah!

This is a huge concept in my life, that of pain and injury, it totally transfers to my non-running life as well…I’m sure I’ll come back to it another time!

Moving on…

After picking up the Bean, we arrived home to another surprise…

…dinner cooked and on the table for all of us, courtesy of the Sweetheart. Spaghetti with homemade tomato gravy…perfection!

Isn’t he awesome?

Tonight it’s my turn to whip up something delicious…and I’ve got a yummy idea brewing!

Have you had the experience of running through pain (not injury), or living through it? How did you handle it, and are you stronger for it today?

  1. great run!! i feel like i’m living through pain right now as we try to get pregnant (something that comes so easily for some), but i know when i have that beautiful baby in my arms, i will be stronger for it.

  2. Woot! Woot! Good job on the 5k PR!!! Yeah… I’ve run through lots of pain before… but even harder than that is that stupid voice up in my head that tells me to quit sometimes. I always feel invincible and strong when I can overcome my own head and race well. And I have to say that I’m actually in the same boat as Kathleen… it’s a struggle, but whatever the outcome, it can be positive. 🙂
