Reads Recipes Runs: A Guest Post

Hi everyone! I am Elizabeth over at reads recipes runs,  and I am so excited to share a post with you today while Jamie is off gallivanting around Jackson Hole. (I might just be a tad jealous-slash-wishing the weather is bad so she will drive down to see me in Utah.)

Jamie is so sweet, and I can’t get enough of her amazing blog. I am so honored that she asked me to share a post with you today!

I don’t know how many of you are runners, but I think that you need to be a certain level of crazy, to be a runner, and I’ve created a little list of why runners are crazy (don’t deny it, let’s face facts here people).

  1. It’s evolutionarily unnecessary to run when not being chased.
  2. Why do something that looks remotely like a hamster wheel? You are not a rodent. (Is a hamster even a rodent? Clearly I didn’t pay attention in school.)
  3. In order to be any good at it, you have to keep doing it, over and over and over again. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expect a different result. Am I the only one who sees the correlation?
  4. Let’s talk about those all-weather runners. IT’S SNOWING. Drink some cocoa. Conversely, put a shirt on, seriously your man nipples are not appreciated on my morning commute.
  5. Alarms going off while it’s still dark? It’s just not right.
  6. You are literally pounding yourself.
  7. I think it really might be some weird club of psychos who enjoy pain. Don’t believe me? Foam roll and get back to me.
  8. Made up words like “tempo” runs and weird distances like 26.2 miles. Seriously? What’s the .2 for, to prove that you are indeed truly nutzo?
  9. Runners eat things like chia seeds and gu. What’s wrong with real food?
  10. Races cost a lot of money. So you pay… to run?  To do something you most likely do every other day?

Here is the truth though…I am a crazy runner. I am not fast, and I can’t run that far, but I love it. I think it’s so funny that neither Jamie, or I, ever ran much in school (not running the mile became an art-form for me really) and now we are both those crazy ladies you see lacing up our sneakers on a Saturday morning.

But it’s something we are both passionate about, and really, when aren’t passions just a little crazy?

Every one of the reasons above (except for maybe the treadmill one, I don’t like treadmills, and the shirtlessness) are actually one of the things I love about running. Running makes me feel free, like I can conquer the world! I love that it’s challenging and stressful on your body, because when I finish a workout, I know I’ve accomplished something great. I love catching the sunrise, and while foam rolling makes me want to cry a little, I am running-injury free, (knock on wood!) thanks to it.

But what I think is the best thing about running, is that every single time I lace up my shoes and hit the pavement, I learn something more about myself, and that is reason enough to put up with the crazy.

Are any of you runners? Non-runners don’t think I forgot about you! What’s your favorite workout?
