Book Review – Following Atticus

Good morning! Last week I finished, “Following Atticus” by Tom Ryan. I chose the book as yet another in my growing line of mountain adventure memoirs/stories. The books falling under this genre in 2012 have included, “Into Thin Air” by Jon Krakauer, “Into the Wild” also by Mr. Krakauer, “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed, “Born to Run” by Christopher McDougall,  and now “Following Atticus.”

Why mountain adventure? I have no idea. Maybe because people seem to be in such a raw state when they’re in nature for long periods of time: more honest, more themselves, more able to see the world for what it is rather than what commerce has made it. Maybe because the idea of going on a solo adventure is a bucket list item for me. Maybe because I like to read about people doing super crazy, wild things…from the safety of my warm house. I’m not totally sure though.

Regardless, I finished “Following Atticus” last week.

Cute pup, I think so!

“Following Atticus” was a quick, fun read about a man, his dog, and the relationship mountain climbing helped them develop. The book read like a series of journal entries about the events leading up to, and including, Tom and Atticus climbing (multiple times) the 48 4000+ foot mountain peaks in New Hampshire, the White Mountains.

I honestly can’t say much more about the book, but I would recommend it if you’re into dogs, which I am, and mountaineering, which I am…at least in theory.

If you’re looking for a well-written piece that will stick with you for the long haul, and make you all but hike to REI to start buying all the gear you’ll need to start your backpacking adventures…I would pick one of the other books I listed. “Following Atticus”, while entertaining, didn’t leave me wishing the story wouldn’t end…which is my barometer for a really amazing book.

I think I’m off the mountain for a while, and moving on with some pretty random choices. I’ll let you know how that goes!

Do you ever get stuck in a rut with one specific genre of book, or maybe movies?

Happy Friday Eve!
